It is a nuclear-armed state, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, officially known as the Russian Federation. It is a major player in global geopolitics with geographically vast natural resources like oil, gas, and minerals. It has a Arctic access and borders with 16 countries.

Strategically, Russia is more isolated internationally, increasingly dependent on a limited network of autocracies, while facing widespread international condemnation, border tensions, and intensifying domestic state control. Unless the war ends or deeper systemic reforms occur, maintaining this fragile equilibrium under continued pressure into 2026 looks increasingly difficult.
