Russel Brand Exclusive
Russell Brand has been charged with rape and sexual assault, authorities in London announced Friday. Metropolitan Police said in a statement that Brand has been charged in connection with five offenses involving four women between 1999 and 2005. They include one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault, the statement said. In a video statement ,Brand denied accusations, saying, “I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile. But what I never was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity”.
Detectives in the U.K. said they began investigating the case in September 2023 after “receiving a number of allegations” following reporting by Channel 4 and the Times of London.
According to police, the allegations against Brand include:
A woman who alleged she was raped in the Bournemouth, England, area in 1999
A woman who alleged she was indecently assaulted in the Westminster area of London in 2001
A woman who alleged she was orally raped and sexually assaulted in the Westminster area in 2004
A woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted in the Westminster area between 2004 and 2005
The accusers were not identified
“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers,” Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said in a statement. “The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.”
Brand is scheduled to appear in court on May 2, but is currently living in the United States. According to the Times of London, he and his family moved to Florida last year.

In September 2023, the Times of London and Channel 4 published a joint investigation, including a 90-minute documentary in which four women alleged that Brand sexually assaulted or raped them between 2006 and 2013. One woman said she was only 16 when she engaged in an “emotionally and sexually abusive relationship” with Brand, who was in his 30s. She described a situation where he caused her to choke when he “forced his penis down her throat.” Another woman said Brand raped her at his Los Angeles home in 2012.
Cutting Ties of Agencies
After the documentary aired, the comedian’s talent agency subsequently cut ties with him, his comedy tour was suspended and London police called for potential victims of Brand to come forward.
Brand rose to fame beginning in the mid-2000s, first as a stand-up comedian and television star in the U.K. before appearing in several Hollywood movies, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He was also briefly married to pop singer Katy Perry.
He has since amassed large followings on YouTube and Rumble, where he hosts a daily live show. Brand also has gained popularity in right-wing circles in the United States, appearing at the Republican National Convention in support of Donald Trump in 2024.

Russell Edward Brand was born in Orsett Hospital in Grays, Essex, England. He is the only child of Barbara Elizabeth and photographer Ronald Henry Brand. Brand’s parents separated when he was six months old, and he was raised by his mother.
When Brand was 8, his mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer and then breast cancer one year later. While she underwent treatment, Brand lived with relatives. When he was 14, he developed bulimia nervosa. At age 16, Brand left home because of disagreements with his mother’s partner. He then started to use illegal drugs such as cannabis, amphetamines, LSD, and ecstasy. Brand says he had a “strange relationship” with his father, whom he saw sporadically and who took him to visit prostitutes during a trip to Thailand when Brand was a teenager. He made his theatrical debut at the age of 15 in a school production of Bugsy Malone, and then began work as a film extra. Brand attended Grays School and in 1991, he was accepted to the Italia Conti Academy and had his first year of tuition funded by Essex County Council. After his first year at Italia Conti Academy, Brand was expelled for illegal drug use and poor attendance. Brand has said that he was sexually abused by a tutor.

Brand has frequently campaigned for political issues. In June 2013, he appeared in a video in support of Chelsea Manning. Brand was ejected from the GQ Awards show on 3 September 2013 after receiving the “Oracle” award. In his acceptance speech, he mentioned sponsor Hugo Boss‘s former business making uniforms for the Gestapo. Brand said of the Nazis, “They did look fucking fantastic, let’s face it” before he goose stepped across the stage in a comical imitation of the Nazi march. Brand was eventually ejected from the event after GQ editor Dylan Jones confronted Brand with his view that the speech was “very offensive”—Brand replied by saying that the Nazis’ treatment of the Jewish people was “very offensive”. On 23 October 2013, Brand was interviewed by Jeremy Paxman for the BBC’s Newsnight in which he disparaged the British political system as ineffectual and encouraged the British electorate not to vote.[128] He was challenged by Paxman about his call for “revolution” and whether someone who had never voted could edit a political magazine. When asked by Paxman what a revolution would look like, Brand replied: A socialist egalitarian system based on the massive redistribution of wealth, [with] heavy taxation of corporations … I think the very concept of profit should be hugely reduced … I say profit is a filthy word, because wherever there is a profit there is also a deficit.
revealed how his marriage to Katy Perry ended and praised his ‘beloved’ wife Laura just a day before being charged with rape and other sex offences. Brand, 49, who is believed to be living in the US, was today charged with five sex offences against four different women alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2005. They relate to the alleged rape of a woman in 1999 in the Bournemouth area and the oral rape and sexual assault of a woman in 2004 in the Westminster area. He has also been charged with indecently assaulting a woman in 2001 and sexually assaulting another woman between 2004 and 2005 – both offences are alleged to have taken place in Westminster, London. The comedian was charged by post and ordered to appear in court next month – just a day after releasing his latest podcast on streaming platform Rumble. In the podcast, titled Stay Free, Brand shared intimate details of his marriage with Perry and doled out praise for his current wife Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares two children. Brand was married to US pop singer Perry from 2010 to 2012, but is now married to Laura, the sister of presenter Kirsty. Brand and Perry were married at a lavish ceremony after the comedian proposed at the Rambagh Palace hotel in Jaipur.
In the short clip, posted on his X page, Brand said: ‘What I can tell you is when I was married to Katy Perry, she’s like not entirely normal because she’s an extraordinary massive star.
‘She’s not weird or off key and wasn’t involved in anything nefarious as far as I could tell.
‘And the reasons our marriage didn’t work were the normal, human reasons marriages don’t work and I have nothing but respect for her even though I obviously disagree with her political views.
‘But I probably disagree with some of my wife’s, my beloved wife Laura’s, political views. So you always disagree with people don’t you.
‘I think in general Hollywood and the culture is used to spellbind you and distract you I’ve been very very clear about that.
‘And I do now believe that there are planned and organised dark intelligence, there is a planned and organised dark intelligence at work, using the culture for distraction and control.’
On the podcast, Brand discusses news and celebrity gossip, such as the apparent ousting of Elon Musk from Donald Trump‘s inner circle, the Netflix drama Adolescence, and Kanye West.
The charges come more than 18 months after Met Police detectives began an investigation after Brand was accused of rape, sexual assaults and emotional abuse by several women in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches in September 2023.
In the podcast, titled Stay Free, Brand shared intimate details of his marriage with Perry, with the pair married from 2010 to 2012 (Pictured: Perry performs at the 2011 Grammy awards against a video of the pair’s wedding)
Brand is pictured with wife Laura Gallacher, who is the sister of presenter Kirsty Gallacher Brand has previously denied the accusations, and said all his sexual relationships were ‘absolutely always consensual’. Detective superintendent Andy Furphy from the Metropolitan Police said: ‘The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. ‘The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police. A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk. ‘Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.’
Brand will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday May 2. Jaswant Narwal, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: ‘We have today authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offences. ‘We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023. ‘We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.’
In November 2024, the CPS confirmed that detectives from the Metropolitan Police had passed on an evidence file regarding sex offence allegations against Brand. Brand, who presented a BBC Radio 2 show between 2006 and 2008, left the role after his on-air prank, now known as Sachsgate, when he left a ‘lewd’ voicemail for Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs about his granddaughter. He also presented on Big Brother spin-off shows Big Brother’s Big Mouth and Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack in the noughties.
