Russia–Ukraine War

The Russia–Ukraine War is one of the most consequential conflicts of the 21st century, began in 2014 and escalated dramatically in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine. This war has reshaped global geopolitics, triggered humanitarian crises, strained economies, and tested the unity of Western alliances such as NATO and the European Union.

Background

Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. Post-independence, Ukraine oscillated between pro-European and pro-Russian governments. In 2013, Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych abandoned a deal with the EU under pressure from Russia, sparking massive protests (Euromaidan). Yanukovych fled, and a pro-Western interim government took over in 2014. In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea after a disputed referendum. Soon after, pro-Russian separatists seized parts of Donetsk and Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine. A conflict in the Donbas region began, with over 14,000 killed by 2021.

24 February 2022

Russia launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine from multiple directions. Moscow claimed it aimed to “demilitarize and de-Nazify” Ukraine a claim widely rejected internationally. The Real Reasons Behind the Invasion as per Russia Perspective are as under:-

1.        NATO Expansion Threat.    Russia is claiming that NATO’s eastward expansion since the 1990s threatened its national security. Ukraine had expressed intentions to join NATO and the EU, which Russia viewed as unacceptable. Putin’s Argument is A NATO-aligned Ukraine could host Western weapons near Russia’s borders.

2.       “Denazification” of Ukraine.      Putin stated that Ukraine was controlled by neo-Nazis. However, Ukraine is a democratic state with a Jewish president (Volodymyr Zelenskyy), and no credible evidence supports this claim. Since 2014, separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk (backed by Russia) fought the Ukrainian government. Russia accused Ukraine of committing genocide there, which international observers rejected as false. Russia has long seen Ukraine as part of its historical and cultural sphere. Ukraine’s growing tilt towards the West (especially after the 2014 Maidan Revolution) threatened Russia’s influence in the region.  A thriving, democratic Ukraine allied with Europe was seen as a threat to Putin’s regime, as it could inspire pro-democracy movements inside Russia.

Global Reaction

1.    The UN General Assembly condemned the invasion.

2.    NATO and the EU provided unprecedented military, economic, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

         3.   The U.S. alone has contributed over $120 billion in aid (as of 2025).

4.   Severe sanctions were imposed on Russia, freezing assets and cutting off major banks from SWIFT.

Casualties and Displacement & Global Economic Losses

Estimated over 500,000 military casualties combined. Over 8 million Ukrainian refugees were displaced across Europe, with 4 million still outside Ukraine in 2025. Oil, gas, and grain prices surged in 2022 and 2023.  Ukraine, a top global grain exporter, faced blockades of Black Sea ports, later partly resolved through Turkey-brokered grain deals.

Conclusion

The Russia–Ukraine War remains unresolved after more than three years of full-scale fighting and over a decade of broader conflict. While Ukraine has shown remarkable resilience, the path to peace is uncertain. The war has reshaped Europe’s security architecture, redefined global alliances, and raised enduring questions about sovereignty, deterrence, and international law. As of mid-2025, the world watches cautiously, hoping for a diplomatic resolution that upholds justice and stability. Western companies withdrew from Russia; the ruble devalued significantly. Russia strengthened ties with China, Iran, and North Korea.
