Formula One Cars are the world’s fastest regulated road-course racing cars, owing to high cornering speeds achieved by generating large amounts of aerodynamic downforce, most of which is generated by front and rear wings, as well as underbody tunnels. The cars depend on electronics, aerodynamics, suspension and tyres. Traction control, launch control, automatic shifting and other electronic driving aids were first banned in 1994. They were briefly reintroduced in 2001 and have more recently been banned since 2004 and 2008, respectively. With the average annual cost of running a team designing, building and maintaining cars, pay transport at approximately 220 Million $, formula One’s financial and political battles are widely reported. The Formula One Group is owned by Liberty Media, which acquired it in 2017 from private-equity firm CVC Capital Partners for 8 Billion US $.

History

Formula One originated from the World Manufacturers Championship (1925-1930) and European Drivers’ Championship (1931-1939). Teh Formula is a set of rules that all participants’ cars must follow. Formula One was formula agreed upon in 1946 to officially become effective in 1947. The first Grand Prix in accordance with the new regulations was the 1946 Turin Grand Prix anticipating the formula’s official start. Before World War II, a number Grand Prix racing organisations made suggestions for a new championship to replace the European Championship, but due to the suspension of racing during the conflict, the new international Furmula for cards did not become formalised until 1946, to become effictive in 1947. The new World Championship was instituted to commence in 1950.

The first world championship race, the 1950 British Grand Prix, took place at Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom on 13 May 1950. First drivers’ who won world championship was Giuseppe Farina defeating his teammate Jaun Manuel Fangio in a minimal time.

Constructors

A formula One Cunstructor is the entity credited for designing the chassis and the engine. If both are designed by the same company, that company receives sole credit as the constructor. If they are disigned by different companies, both are credited, and the name of the chassis designer is places before that of the engine designer i.e. McLaren-Mercedes. All constructors are scored individually, even if they share either chassis or engine with another constructor (e.g. Williams-Ford, Williams-Honda in 1983).

Drivers Criteria

Every team in Formula One must run two cars in every session in a Grand Prix weekend, and every team may use up to four drivers in a season. A team may also run two additional drivers in Free Practice sessions, which are often used to test potential new drivers for a career as a Formula One or gain experienced drivers to evaluate the car. Most drivers are contracted for at least the duration of a season, with driver changes taking place in between seasons, in comparison to early years when drivers often competed on an ad hoc basis from race to race. Each competitor must be in the possession of a FIA Super Licence to compete in a Grand Prix, which is issued to drivers who have met the criteria of success in junior motorsport categories and having achieved 300 kilometers (190mi) of running in a Formula One car. Drivers may also be issued a Super Licence by the World Motor Sport Council if they fail to meet criteria.

Is F1 raced in India

The first Formula One race in India, known as the Indian Grand Prix, was held on 30 October 2011 at Buddha International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Race was scheduled from 2011 to 2013. Sebestian Vettel won the first Indian Grand Prix in 2011, driving for the Red Bull Racing. The Indian Grand Prix was discontinued after after 2013 due to financial issues and the withdrawal of tax exemptions by the Uttar Pradesh government. While there are no currently discussion for Formula One in India. There is ongoing discussion about the possibility of MotoGP returning to India, which can be a reason or expectation for Formula One return to India in the future.

Why The Only Formula One had failed in India

There are some reason which may be leads to failure to establish a lasting presence in India:-

  1. High Costs : The financial cost of hosting a Formula 1 event is very huge. Formula 1 events require significant fees to be paid to F1 management. Hosting the Indian Grand Prix involved high upfront costs that placed a considerable financial burden on the organisation. The Indian Grand Prix, held in Greater Noida from 2011 to 2013, faced challenges in terms of high operational costs and needed very huge investment in infrastructure.
  2. Lack of Interest : While there was some initial excitement, the long term interest in F1 among Indian fans was limited. The Indian were very interested in Cricket only, compared to other motorsports which dominates the Indian sports landscape.
  3. Logistical Challenges: The Infrastructure required for F1 races, including transport accommodation, and facilities, posed logistical challenges in India. Issues such as traffic, security and the need for extensive upgrades to the surrounding area impacted the overall experience. Infrastructure cost for extensive development and maintenance of infrastructure related to the F1 event was a major expense.
  4. Government interest: The Indian government had complex regulations regarding sporting events, including taxes and custom duties, which complicated the financial viability of hosting      F1 races. Local Taxes and duties of the Indian government imposed heavy taxes on sporting events, including entertainment taxes that were particularly high for F1 Races. These financial obligations made it harder for the organizers to turn a profit.
  5. Audience Support : Cricket remains the most popular sport in India. Even other motorsports, like MotoGP or local racing events are also not able to draw attention of Indian people.
  6. Sponsorship : There were not even a company who can sponsor the Formula 1 due to the high cost risk. The high cost risk due to uncertain fanbase, attendance of audience. The limited number of devoted F1 fans in India.

Overall, these financial challenges culminated in a scenario where the Indian Grand Prix struggled to remain viable, leading to its eventual discontinuation in 2013.

Indian Formula 1 Drivers

We have had two Indian F1 drivers, Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandok. Narain’s best finish was a 4th place at the United States GP in Indianpolis, 2008. Karun Chandhok had a shorter stint in F1, but today, he is well respected as a technical pundit when it comes to Formula 1 racing.
